Accommodation options in Australia

Accommodation options in Australia

A comfortable stay away from home is one of the essentials for students studying abroad. Luckily, there are lots of housing opportunities for international students in Australia that can help you achieve the task. Let’s explore to find the one.

On-campus accommodation:

Most Australian universities facilitate on-campus housing facilities that students can rent. It is one of the most preferred and in-demand stay modes to date by freshmen. These accommodations are often in the vicinity of the Universities and come with various in-house facilities such as laundry, mess, etc. Living on-campus is a great chance to meet fellow students and befriend them as you start to settle down in a new country. Accommodation can range from shared dorm rooms, single rooms, or private studio apartments and can cost between AUD 110-280 per week.

Remember, not all universities automatically assign on-campus accommodations. Students must inform the University about the same in advance. The places fill up fast, so you have to start early with the application process. As an international student, you may get accommodation priority.

Off-Campus Accommodation:

If you choose to live off-campus, there is a whole range of housing options, too. The off-campus rent is usually paid every two weeks in advance and costs you about AUD 185-440 a week. The rental amount will vary from the city you choose to stay in. Electricity bills, internet, and laundry may or may not be included with the stay and will have to be paid separately.

Student Accommodation:

It’s like on-campus accommodation, but with an exception, student accommodation is managed privately, not by universities. One may find lots of student accommodation options nearby the universities. These accommodations are designed specifically for the students and thus come with mess and study rooms. Here too, you get a chance to meet students from different countries and hence learn and grow from different perspectives.

Homestay with a Host Family:

Homestay means living with a local family and paying rent every month. This housing style has its charm as you will get to know Australian culture with a close eye. Besides, you get to hone your language skills and know local markets and visit local attractions. With homestay, you will either get a separate or a shared room along with some facilities to ease your stay. Homestays usually include meals, which is a big savior during busy days.

Private rental/ Shared Accommodation:

It is yet another popular mode of stay among the students studying in Australia. Renting a private space or sharing can be more cost-effective than on-campus accommodations. If you are looking for a personal living space for yourself, you have options to rent a flat, house, or studio apartment on your own. You may also share a house or apartment, it will not only cut your living cost, but you will get to interact with people from their own country or hometown.

International students opting for off-campus accommodation may face additional challenges in finding a suitable living place for themselves. Here’s sharing some helpful tips that will make your task a lot easier.

  • Make sure you do thorough research. Connect with your friends or relatives already staying in Australia or have been there, ask for recommendations to find the best place.
  • Understand the legal documentation process well in advance.
  • Examine the area online while you are still in your home country and visit once you reach your destination.
  • Check if there is a proper commute mode between your college and the place you want to live.
  • Check if the area has all the necessities, like groceries, medical shops, etc.
  • Check the premise and test security before you deposit the rental amount.
  • Take time and be sure of the place before finalizing it.

There are a lot of things that go on deciding on a place to live, especially in a foreign land. Try making a list of everything that matters to you the most, like location, type of accommodation, private or shared space, budget, etc., and prioritize them according to your needs. Having a clear idea about what kind of place you want to live in, helps you narrow down your housing options and ensure you have the best possible experience studying and living abroad.
